3.1. Humane restraint for halal slaughter of ruminants
3.1.1. Upright restraint — double rail or box
Upright restraint (Fig. 1) is the most humane method of restraint for
stunning or for un-stunned slaughter of ruminants (Grandin, 1994).
There are a number of types of humane upright restraint; a modified
RSPCA box as shown in Fig. 1 can be used for cattle in small throughput
operations. A double rail system ending in a stun or kill box works well
