My goal is to show how the caregiver–child retionship influences the emotional development of preschoolers. Toward that goal, this paper is organized into four sections. The first section reports some evidence pertaining to emotional development, such as, the expression of emotions, understanding of emotions, and regulation of emotions. In the second section, the role of the caregiver–child relationship in emotional deveopment is examined. In the third section, the implications of findings relating to emotional development and the role of the caregiver–child relationship for teachers are examined. In the final section, some strategies for promoting emotional development of preschoolers are
suggested.
