GMA News Flash Report said the residents raised various concerns ranging from possible water contamination to the unbearable odor of improperly dumped garbage in opposing the project.
"Dahil ito'y ground water basin, detrimental (ang pagtatayo ng landfill)," said Catholic priest Cornelio Matanguihan.
"Kung ilalagay dito ‘yang basura, hindi maaaring hindi magkaroon ng amoy ‘yan dahil hindi segregated na basura ang ilalagay diyan," the priest explained.
He called on local officials to consider "the feelings of residents here and those living in tourist areas like Mira Hills Subdivision."
In a press statement, the protesters said having the landfill in Ternate would hamper the town’s tag as a tourism area. The area has been declared a buffer zone for Mt. Palay-palay as well as an environmentally-constrained area.
The sanitary landfill is being constructed in Barangay Sapang by Environsave, Inc., according to the official website of Cavite.
Earlier reports said local residents suspected that the landfill was intended to accommodate electrical and hazardous wastes from Japan, as part of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA).
Cavite Governor Erineo "Ayong" Maliksi has denied the allegations and claimed the site would be solely used to solve the waste disposal problem in the province
