PHONOTACTICS IN ENGLISH
TEAM TASK: INQUIRY INTO PHONOTACTIC RULES IN ENGLISH
Objectives:
a. To improve your inquiry skills
b. To improve your inductive thinking (generalization) skills (going from bits and pieces to a big picture )
c. To improve your report writing skills
d. To improve your team work skills
Instructions:
1. Work as a group of no more than 4 members. Please be fair and share the work. Do not take advantage of your friend's
friendship and generosity.
2. To understand this inquiry, study the phonotactic rules in Thai, given on the Power Point slides in the class of Thursday 10
September. They have already been uploaded in the Google classroom.
3. Recall what you know about words and syllables in English and extract the phonotactic rules of English.
Use dictionaries as your resources. Look at the pronunciation. We are working with sounds, and not spelling.
4. Think about, or collect, all possible combinations of sounds for producing syllables in English and extract the rules which
govern the shape of possible syllables in English.
5. Report those rules in a written report. The report of your inquiry should be typed neatly on Word using the Time News
Roman 12 Font,with a 1.5 line spacing and a page layout with a normal margin.
6. The contents of the report should include the following:

5.2.1 The description of the rules in a list. See an example in the slides used in the Sept. 10, 2015 class.
Do not forget to give examples. If your examples are parts of a word, underline the syllables you are
pointing out.
5.2.2 A formulaic summary of these rules, using the symbols: C, V, parentheses and curly brackets.
