Chlamydiaceae has two genera (Chlamydia and Chlamydophila)
under the new taxonomic classifcation. Chlamydia genera include
C. trachomatis, C. muridarum, and C. suis. Chlamydophila includes
the newly renamed strains of C. abortus, C. felis, C. pecorum, C.
pneumoniae, C. caviae, and C. psittaci. Chlamydophila psittaci has
eight known serovars; six have been primarily isolated in birds
and two strains have been isolated in mammals. Identifcation of
serovar may help to determine the source of infection.
