odorants, and the actual odorant emissions in areaswhere odor concentration is seriously high are periodicallyinvestigated (Yu et al., 2009).The Sa-sang industrial area (SSIA) was completed in 1975, and itis difficult to conduct environmental monitoring in the areabecause residential, commercial, and industrial zones are soconcentrated. In particular, the environmental problem due to theunderdeveloped manufacturing industry occupying most of theSSIA is serious. Thus, the Busan government consistently has triedto improve environmental quality, but the incidence rate of odorcomplaints from various causes has increased every year. Anenormous residential area is located in the east of the SSIA. Odorantscan easily move to the residential area owing to the westerlywinds that prevail in the country. For this reason, there are constantodor complaints registered in the SSIA. This phenomenon increasedmarkedly when residents moved in on a large scale in the early1990s.Various aspects must be considered to analyze the cause andcharacteristics of odorants for the minimization of odor complaints(Emerson and Rajagopal, 2004; Kim et al., 2005). We have toaccurately analyze the characteristics of the change in odorantsthroughout the year because there are numerous facilities thatproduce odor emissions located close together in the SSIA. Socialparticipation and strong community involvement in detecting odorproblems are needed to identify and evaluate odor sources causing
