A 2-year-old Speckled Sussex hen presented for lameness was found on physical examination to have a distended, doughy coelomic cavity suggestive of egg-related peritonitis. There was also a recent history of cessation of egg laying. Within 1 week of starting trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole and meloxicam orally, she was ambulating normally and continued to do well, including eventually laying eggs again
