A three layer flexible food packaging material
employed for gamma irradiation process has been
prepared. Shelflife study has been carried out with
grape fruit. Shelflife of Non irradiated grape is one
week in the existing package. The vitamin content
of fresh fruit has decreased; on the other hand sugar
content has increased which shows that grape fruit
has ripened within one week. The fruit got fully
spoiled within 8 or 9 days. The proposed package
can be used under gamma radiation process that can
extend Shelflife from one to more than two weeks.
There was not much change in the vitamin content
after one week. The change in sugar content was
noticeable after 12 days. Irradiation process has
extended the Shelflife of the product by controlling
the ripening process. It also kills the micro organism
which may spoil the fruit.The newly developed
packaging material has got the middle layer PVOHStarch
blend, which is fully biodegradable. This will
make the multi layer package partially
biodegradable
