This story is a simple yet unique Korean short story made by Kim Yong Ik but with complicated past between the wife, the husband and the son. It is about a woman named Choon Soo whose son (Yang Ho) will be wed and with that occasion is the arrival of her long lost husband (Meng Dol) to attend to the said wedding. In Korean culture the wedding of every man is a compliment in the groom’s father for it was their basis of saying whether the father is a good father or not.
The story unfolds how Choon Soo raised her son without her husband whom she separated for many years. Choon Soo is a woman in no other time like women of today that sometimes live in a life of difficulties, filled with bittersweet but often delicious longing and hope for reassurance. She became the breadwinner for the family she ought to serve. Meng Dol, Choon Soo’s husband left his wife and son in search for himself because he was rumored that his wife is better than he was. So, in order to change everything he left to work in a mine without even telling his wife where he was. As a mother, she can’t be judged because she fills up the spaces when her husband was away. As a wife, she is still there waiting for him like doing things like putting his velvet shoes beside the door and she makes a pounded rice ball that represents each year the husband had been away for her husband because since then her husband never came home, she waited for him. Realization of what had happened came and Choon Soo was then reunited with her husband Meng Dol.
This story really does open the minds of every woman that they can have a happy and contented life for sometime without any hand. Every woman must go out of their shells and procreate. A woman must have reformation to boost her morale and gradual tolerance in her surroundings for she will live a happy life. But in every woman’s life there is always a man whom she had loved or will be love.
Life is full of challenges like Choon Soo in her ups and downs she never give up it’s because of her son after that Choon Soo feel better now because her life became more beautiful than it was before. Live a new life and release all the grievances then you’ll feel better.
