Beginning the work of organizational development
DRC began its anti-racism work by building relationships with organizations representing and led by people of color. The staff believed that it was only through this relationship building that the organization could create a shared vision with communities of color and shape its mission and organizational work in relation to that vision. Staff also worked to educate itself and others about racism and build a common analysis of the workings of racism. According to Liz Natter, some of those efforts were successful, and others “fell flat.” The staff knew they needed more resources to do the work right, but they also felt the need to “jump in” and do what they could along the way. They participated in various workshops focused on anti-racism, such as those offered through the Peace Development Fund, and worked with a consultant to establish a one- year plan for their work.
