SOUTHERN TASMANIA
DAY 4-7: In Hobart, explore Tasmania’s capital city with its picturesque waterfront, historic buildings and the bustle and colour of Salamanca Market. See the city spread out below from the summit of Mt Wellington or Mt Nelson, cruise on the River Derwent, tour the Southern Tasmania Wine Region and sample the latest vintage from the local wineries.
Tour up the valley of the Derwent to gaze up at the world’s tallest flowering plants as you walk to spectacular Russell Falls beneath the mighty swamp gums in Mt Field National Park; take a wind jet boat ride on the River Derwent at New Norfolk and feed the trout at the nearby Salmon Ponds.
Tour sout-east to the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur, where you’ll walk in the footdteps of the convicts at Australia’s most important historic site. See breathtaking coastal scenery and meet Tasmania’s native animals and birds at the Tasmanian Devil Park, Taranna.
South-west from Hobart, explore the countryside, wilderness and waterways of the Huon Trail. Ride the Huon River jet boat at Huonville, admire local art and craftwonk in Franklin and Cygnet or pick your own blueberries near Margate. Further south, visit the forest & Heritage Centre at Geeveston then drive onwards to the Tahune Forest Airwalk, a spectacular aerial walkway.
Travel north from Hobart along the Heritage Highway, where colonial villages of Oatlands, Ross and Campbell Town have preserved their heritage in convict-carved sandstone. For a complete contrast choose your route to the East Coast with its beaches, national parks and seaside towns.
