Developmental outcome is multifaceted and influenced
by perinatal events, the NICU environment,
and postdischarge environmental conditions.
Most preterm infants have IQs between 85 and 115
(60% to 90%); 4% to 5% have IQs below 70, and
20% to 24% have borderline IQs (75-85) (Escobar
et al., 1991). Neurobehavioral and temperament
differences are also seen in preterm infants. These
include less adaptability, greater impulsiveness,
more temper tantrums, shorter attention span, increased
rigidity, decreased smiling, and emotional
affect.
