There is still another consideration in this question about discipline. Through studies of children as they grow up in different cultures we are coming to understand more about the supportive and the maiming effects of various forms of discipline. Extreme harshness of insensitivity to the child may prepare him to survive in a harsh environment. But it also may cripple the child’s ability to meet change situations. And today we cannot know the kind of world that children we are rearing will live in as adults. For us, therefore, the most important question to ask about any method of discipline is: How will it affect the child’s capacity to face change? Will it give the child the kind of strength necessary to live under new and unpredictable conditions?
