A feeling of loss and grief is to be expected after
the event. It is helpful for nurses to be aware of
various grief theories, such as those of Kubler-Ross
(1969), Parkes and Markus (1998), Stroebe and
Schut (1999) and Worden (2009), to improve
their understanding of possible reactions and
responses of the couple and to provide
appropriate support. Lindemann (1944)
identified the concept of ‘disenfranchised grief’
in response to a loss not obvious to society,
such as in the case of an ectopic pregnancy
or miscarriage, when no child has been born.
O’Connor and Kovacs (2003) reported that the
psychological effect of a non-viable pregnancy is
underestimated by healthcare professionals as
well as other non-professionals. However, Pearce
and Easton (2005) recognised the importance of
providing psychological care as well as physical
care for women and their partners. Although the
woman may have physically recovered following
an ectopic pregnancy she may still be
experiencing significant emotional distress
(Pearce and Easton 2005).
