Let us return to those two questions posed earlier in this chapter: ‘(1) how much comtext do I have to cover, and (2) how will recognize a pattern when I see it?’ (Fife, 2005, 1). These question are impossible to answer theoretically. The practical exercise at the end of this chapter offers insight into how it feels to engage in participant observation and allows you to assess your ability to engage in the process. Ethnographical research is a craft that can only be leaned by doing, it is impossible to become competent in the use of this method without actually getting out there and engage. This research method id primarily concerned with ‘going native’, getting inside the context and being able to observe, analyse and interpret what you see, feel, hear and resd. It is about immersing yourself totally in a field study site and still remaining ‘critical’ of all the data you gather.
