Talaoceras was a large rhinoceros with a single small horn on the tip of its nose. It comes from Miocene deposits of North America. Although it is a true rhinoceros, its body plan reflected that of a hippopotamus, with short, stumpy limbs, a massive barrel chest, and a skull with high-crowned cheek teeth. Teleoceras fossils are found in large numbers in many ancient river and pond deposits on the high plains of western North America. One such place is Ashfall Fossil Beds State Park (see panel, right). Here hundreds of complete Teleoceras skeletons are found. Some specimens have grass seeds fossilized in their throats, confirming that Teleoceras was a grass-eater.
