3.2. Principle component analysis
A PCA of place dimensions identified three dimensions (social-ecological,narrative and name-based, and knowledge-based) as primary components. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy was 0.64 and Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (χ2 (10) = 173.877, p b 0.001). The communalities were all above 0.3, confirming
that each dimension shared common variance with other dimensions. These three place dimensions together explained 87% of the total variance (Fig. 1). Initial Eigen values indicate that these first three factors explained 46%, 24%, and 17% of the variance, respectively, suggesting that similar analyses in the future may only need to code these three dimensions.
