Fencing has been an Olympic sport since 1896. The French and Italians won most of the fencing medals from the early years through the 1960s. Edoardo Mangiarotti of Italy amassed an amazing total of 13 medals (six gold, five silver, and two broze) between 1932 and 1956. Since the 1960s the sport has been dominated by Eastern European and Soviet fencers.
