The City
Ever since the Greeks wrested control of Pompeii from the Etruscans in the early 5th century BC, the lush and fertile area around Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples was contested for by different people from the surrounding region. By the first century BC, Rome was in control of Pompeii and the city soon became a popular destination for some of Rome’s most influential citizens. Boasting a large amphitheatre, two theatres, streets lined with bars, businesses and workshops and public fountains on most corners, it was a vibrant, bustling city ... right up until the moment of the eruption.
