Hankering for a pair of sneakers made almost entirely from recycled ocean plastic? Lady Luck just might be on your side this summer. In honor of World Oceans Day on Wednesday, Adidas and Parley for the Oceans are making available a limited number of the shoes, which comprise uppers derived from illegal deep-sea fishing nets and other manmade debris collected off the coasts of the Maldives. Each sneaker consists of roughly 16.5 post-consumer plastic bottles, plus about 13 grams of gill-net plastic, according to Adidas. And, from June 8 through July 31, Instagrammers can enter to win one of 50 pairs by uploading a video that demonstrates their commitment to eliminating single-use plastic items from their lives.
