The profession of teaching is also changing in the digital, online world. In the past 10 years, we have gone from almost no online students to more than a million K-12 students online. The dramatic increase is geometric, an d while it is unlikely to have a significant impact at the elementary level, it will at the secondary level. Many policy makers perceive the elementary level as more people oriented and hands-on, whereas they often (mistakenly) perceive the secondary level as more content driven. That misperception invites more online, content driven environments. And this problem will contribute to job disappearing over the next 20 years as many middle and high teachers retire without being replaced. Teacher-to-student ratios will change, and fewer teachers will be able to manage the increasing number of students in an online context. Economics drive this and this will transform education as we it today.
