The outcome variable of financial behaviors
of college students was measured by a
summation of a three-item scale based on the
following questions: (a) How often do you/
does your household put off buying something
you need-such as food, clothing, medical
care, or housing-because you don’t have
money?; (b) During the past 12 months, how
much difficulty did you/did your household
have paying bills?; and (c) Thinking about the
end of each month over the past 12 months,
how much money did you/did your household
have left over? The first 2 items allowed for
5 responses and the last item allowed for 4
responses, resulting in a possible range of 3
to 14. The responses to the questions were
coded so that better financial practices were
represented by a higher score.
