A proposal for power generation consuming municipal waste
continues to be developed. It is based on combined process involving
gas and steam turbines branches and uses highly pressurized
fluidized bed boiler generating highly super-heated steam as well.
The MSW is gridding to around 5 mm average particles and fed
into the pressurized vessel as slurry, thus avoiding cumbersome
and costly cascade feeding systems. In addition, the present process
dispenses fuel pre-drying, as usually required by more conventional
processes, thus with substantial savings on capital and
operational costs. In addition, it has been verified that the choice
of boiler operating with bubbling fluidized bed led to several
advantages over more conventional techniques.
When compared with existing power units based on MSW, the
present proposal indicates the possibility of achieving relatively
high efficiencies. Such unit could consume the waste generated
by around 2 million inhabitants in order to provide electric power
for thousands, not to mention the contribution to solve the very
important issue of municipal waste disposal.
This study might be improved to reach even higher overall effi-
ciencies. Such should concentrate on varying the following
parameters:
