The very tiny plants and animals that float in the top layer of the oceans are called plankton. The plants are called phytoplankton, the animals are zooplankton. Phytoplankton are the basis of all ocean life. They are food for small animals who in turn are eaten by larger ones. Phytoplankton are often amazing shapes. They make food by photosynthesis, like all plants. They get substances such as carbon dioxide and minerals from sea water. Zooplankton swim near the surface at night, eating the phytoplankton. During the day, they sink deeper to hide where it is darker.
