The bridge spans the river between Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai province, Thailand and Huay Xai in Bokeo province, Laos.
It is part of the Greater Mekong sub-region north-south economic R3A highway that passes through Laos all the way to Kunming in China, a distance of over 1,000 km.
The bridge is linked to the R3A Highway in Laos by a 6 km service road, while on the Thai side a shorter 3 km divided highway merges with the Chiang Khong-Thoen highway and eventually joins highway 1 to Phayao. Just 2 km from the bridge’s service road highway 1052 links Chiang Rai a distance of around 100 km to the west.
