Attitude is another factor that can cause homesickness in teens. Teens who anticipate having a good time away from home tend to fare better than teens who expect the worst. Fears might include getting lost, not making friends, not finding suitable food choices, medical emergencies or neglect of priorities at home, such as the care of a pet or desertion of parents and siblings. Parents can help improve the attitude of pessimistic teens with constant reassurance and a positive outlook. Even parents who don’t want their teens to leave should express strength and support, to ensure their child will feel as confident as possible. Avoid statements like, “I’ll miss you so much. I don’t know what I’ll do without you.” Instead try, “I’m so proud of you. I’m so excited for you. This will be a wonderful experience. I want you to enjoy it.”
