In one study, Krueger and Clement 0994) asked their participants to complete a personality test, in which they had to agree or disagree with various statements. Sometime later, they were asked to estimate the percentage of the population who would agree with each of these statements. The percentage estimates were influenced by the participants' own answers. For example, participants who agreed that they would like to be a singer predicted that 56% of the population would also like to be Singers. The corresponding percentage was only 40% for those who did not want to be Singers. In similar fashion, participants who agreed that they were very sociable predicted that more other people would claim to be very sociable than did participants who did not agree.
