The central bank of brazil used about $7 billion of reservesin a direct intervention to buythe real in the foreign exchange market and protect the real from depreciation. It also used indirect intervention by raising short-term interrest rates in brazil. The intervention was costly, however, because it increased the cost of borrowing for households, corporations, and government agencies in brazil and thus could reduceeconomic growth.
