Causes:
Biological – From the biological view points, Hughes may have acquired OCD through genetics and/or abnormal brain functions. It is believed that insufficient levels of serotonin are involved in OCD. Perhaps his symptoms worsened during the end of the movie because of further brain damage during various plane crashes.
Psychodynamic- According to Freuds’ psychodynamic theories, if the person is unable to cope with conflicts in the Oedipal stage, they wouldn’t be able to grow to the next step or has regressed back to an earlier stage of psychosexual development. From this perspective, we can assume that Hughes struggle with achievement and the organization of all aspects of his life may be related to his failed relationship with his father and his need to gain control where he feels he has otherwise lost it.
Behavioral- According to neutral stimuli become associated with aversive stimuli through a process of classical conditioning and elicit feeling of anxiety and fear, causing obsessive-compulsive behavior.
Cognitive- It has been shown that the role of memory is associated with obsessive-compulsive behavior. People with compulsion are often proven to have poor memory.
