Like incumbents, supervisors have direct information about the duties associated with a job. Therefore, they’re also considered SMEs. Yet, because they’re not currently performing the job, supervisors may find it more difficult to explain all the tasks involved in it. This is especially true of tasks the supervisors cannot observe directly, such as mental tasks or tasks performed out in the field. On the other hand, supervisors who have seen more than one job incumbent perform a job bring a broader perspective to the job analysis process. Whereas an incumbent provides information about what she or he in particular does, supervisors can provide information about the tasks typically associated with the job. Supervisors also may be in a better position to describe what tasks should be include in the job, and what tasks could be included if the job is to be redesigned.
