If sufficient end restraints are provided, compression membrane action may develop after yielding. For the explosives safety applications considered by this manual, thecontribution of compression membrane action to an element’s ultimate resistanceshould be minor and may be ignored. For other applications, however, such ascolumns with low height/diameter ratios in buildings of 3-stories of more, compressionmembrane action may increase an element’s ultimate resistance significantly and thus, should be considered in its shear design.
