They reach young people at a critical age of development
in which lifestyles, including eating patterns, are developed, tested and adapted in schools and
through social interactions between students, teachers, parents and others (46). Especially, lower
grade levels provide excellent opportunities because eating habits are formed early in life. In
addition, schools have the potential to reach not only students but also staff, teachers, parents and
community members, including young people not attending school. A Health-Promoting School
provides a means to develop and manage nutrition interventions in cooperation with parents and
students.
