The company used the opportunity to run a test production of the two enzymes and of 7-ACA in existing pilot plants and was able to show via mass balances, energy balances and marketing studies that biological production would have a chance in economic terms. The breakthrough was made when an effective method for the isolation and immobilisation of the enzyme was made by a recombinant E.coil and this lowered the production costs. By isolating, purifying and immobilising the enzyme, more stable biocatalysts were made. In consequence, GMOs were not used for the production of 7-ACA,and this made it easier to obtain production permission.
