Barley, a temperate crop, used to be imported
into Nigeria from Europe. A ban in 1988 on the
import of barley malt has resulted in sorghum and
maize being used as the only cereals for local beer
production. Early studies by Skirmer,Okafor and Aniche suggested that lager beers could be
brewed from sorghum. Similar studies on beer
production using a Nigerian millet variety, Pennisetum
maiwa, were also reported.
