Clinical forensic medicine deals with the investigation of living persons and with the assessment of medical findings in the context of the administration of justice. The main fields of clinical forensic work comprise the examination of victims and suspected perpetrators in cases of criminal assault, rape, child abuse, and domestic violence. Apart from these main tasks, there are some special categories such as traffic medicine (e.g., examination of injured pedestrians, determination of driver vs. passenger, assessment of unfitness for driving), age estimation in persons having no personal documents, examination as to the medical preconditions of criminal responsibility, and assessment of fitness to be detained and interrogated. This article gives an overview of the manifold branches of clinical forensic medicine. Some topics are discussed in greater detail: the documentation and recording of bodily injuries, the physical findings in attempted manual/ligature strangulation, and medical hazards in police custody.
