Interviews with the scavengers in the study indicated that each
scavenger earned on the average GH ¢5.00eGH ¢25.00 daily. Over
a six day working week, they could earn GH ¢30.00eGH ¢125.00
per capita. However, for a month they could earn far better from the
sale of accumulated scrap iron. Most of the scavengers at scrap
trading areas were earning incomes higher than their colleagues at dumpsites. Scavengers at “Ashaiman” dumpsite, for example, re-ported making an average of GH ¢16.57 daily per capita, while their colleagues at scrap trading areas were earning an average of GH ¢ 19.25 daily. Table 4 compares the daily income of various scaven-gers in Accra. It shows that scavengers in Accra earn far better than the daily minimum wage in Ghana, which was GH ¢2.25 as of 2009
