viscoelastic,etc.).Inthispaper,theeffectofthecontactmodelonthepredictionofa
system’sdynamicsisanalyzed.Inordertounderstandtheeffectoftheimpactmodelon
the system’sdynamics,simulationsareconductedtoinvestigateasingledegreeof
freedomsystem,atwodegreesoffreedomsystem,andacontinuoussystem,eachwith
rigid stopslimitingtheamplitudeofvibration.Fivedifferentcontactmodelsare
considered:acoefficientofrestitutionmethod,apenaltystiffnessmethod,twosimilar
elastic–plasticconstitutivemodels,andadissimilarelastic–plasticconstitutivemodel.
Frequencysweepsandparametricstudiesshowthatsimplifiedcontactmodelscanlead
to incorrectassessmentsofthesystem’sdynamics.Intheworstcase,periodicbehavior
can bepredictedinachaoticregime.Additionally,thechoiceofcontactmodelcan
significantlyaffectthepredictionofwearanddamageinthesystem,asisevidencedby
the prominenceofchatterandhighamplituderesponses.
