VOICE (Musical Theatre)
The Music Theatre Department offers a three-part audition process for potential candidates. Each candidate
has the opportunity to present a live audition that represents his/her abilities in singing, dancing and acting.
Taped accompaniments or a capella performances are not acceptable.
Candidates should provide their own pianist.
Candidates may be asked to sing all or part of their prepared repertoire.
The faculty will speak with applicants about their academic and performance experience, immediate and longterm
goals, and expectations of the program. The candidate will have the opportunity to ask questions about
the program, university, and community.
Candidates are encouraged to provide a head-shot or recent photograph, a resume listing theatre training and
roles played and a current repertoire list. Scrapbooks, press-clipping and videotapes are not accepted.
The Vocal Audition: Candidates must prepare three pieces to include the following:
1. One classical selection; an aria or art song not in English.
2. One ballad (slow music theatre selection with a sustained vocal line).
3. One up-tempo (fast music theatre selection that provides a contrast in rhythm, mood,
characterization, style and approach). It may show special skills such as comic timing, dramatic flair,
ability with patter, or, for women, the "belt" voice. Both songs must be in English.
The Acting Audition: Candidates will participate in improvisatory acting exercises during the audition.
The Dance Audition: A brief combination will be taught to the candidate to assess movement ability.
Applicants need to wear comfortable clothing for dance audition. There is time to change after the singing and
acting part of the audition.
