The course English for Architects has been designed for the second-year students of applied architecture (intermediate level).
The aim of the course is to familiarize the learners with the vocabulary of the field of architecture in order to be able to speak and discuss the issues related to the topics. The course provides wider knowledge through self-study and independent work supplementing face-to-face learning. It gives the students who have limited number of lessons the opportunity to practice the vocabulary and revise their knowledge of speciality language. Each part contains reading texts and a few exercises to practice different foreign language skills. At the end of each topic there are revision questions for face-to-face discussions.
The course covers the following topics:
1. Introduction. Architecture of England
2. Tudor and Elizabethan Architecture
3. Stuart and Queen Anne Architecture
4. Georgian and Regency Architecture
5. Victorian and Edwardian Architecture
6. 20th Century and Contemporary Architecture
The course provides a glossary (English-Estonian) where it is possible to add new terms.
The reading texts and the linked websites serve as sources of information and help to improve students´ comprehension skills.
The linked videos provide listening practice as students have to fulfil exercises on them.
The Moodle exercises have been designed to help students to master the special vocabulary and revise different English language structures.
All the Moodle assignments give the learners a chance to go a little deeper into the field. There are two Moodle graded tests after the 3rd and 5th topics. The last task is to prepare a presentation as a pair-work, and to post it in the forum. They are presented in the class using different means of visualization (e.g. powerpoint). All the participants have to provide an assessment of one presentation (according to a given form), and post it in the forum (may be fulfilled as a pair-work).
At the end of the course there is the part ¨Additional Materials¨ which is meant for complementary training and these tasks are not going to be checked/tested. Although, if there is hesitation between two marks, the instructor may evaluate student´s activity here, participation in this Forum task, etc.
