Because this study was meant to evaluate the simultaneous application of GA and LCA in agricultural systems, the first step was selection of one cropping system, which was the most prevalent in the studied region. This study was conducted in Kerman province, central Iran, the second largest province of Iran (180,726 km2), and specifically in the city of Jiroft in the south of the province (28 40'N, 57 44' E). Kerman province produces more than 18% of the cucurbit production in Iran, of which watermelon, with a share of 41% (1.5 million t/year) is the most important. Accordingly, this study focused on watermelon production in Jiroft. Initial data were gathered by sending questionnaires to watermelon producers in
the region. The questionnaires were designed to obtain information about all types of agricultural inputs, energy carriers, equipment and machines used, and economic information. Then, collected data were used in further steps.
