In this study, the experimental group had significantly
shorter duration of active phase of labour, lesser rate of
caesarean delivery, lower labour pain score; shorter duration
of initiation of breast-feeding and a better satisfying labour
experience. Although, other parameters such as oxytocin
use and need for analgesia were not significantly different;
however, women with companion were less likely to need
them. These findings were similar to earlier studies conducted
elsewhere.15,16 Therefore, psychosocial support during
childbirth among Nigerian women appears beneficial and its
inclusion in the management protocol may be justified.
