Comparing the variabilities of salt-mudstones and rock salt, one must take into
account the structural and textural features, and mineralogical composition, from
the point of view of suitability of these rocks for the storage of radioactive materials.
Salt-mudstones include mixed granoblastic–lepidoblastic structures in variable
proportions, when salt itself has a granoblastic, usually homogeneous structure.
Salt-mudstone textures are macroscopically chaotic and disturbed, whereas the
structures of salt are mainly parallel, but to some extend disturbed. As far as tightness
is concerned, the texture-free structure of salt-mudstones is responsible for their
homogeneity and so rather favourable factor compared with the parallel texture of
rock salt.
