In this case there was a low level of automation, but initiatives had been
taken to find an automated solution for the display pallet package (unit
A). If that was done, efficiency would increase for the display pallet
solution, but not necessarily for the overall packaging operation of this
product. Optimizing using the display unit B would increase the
utilization of the existing automated line since more volume would run
through one type of packaging operation. Cost savings would be made
due to simplified material sourcing, adding convenience and customer
value to the value chain, since a first-in-first-out principle would be
more easily achieved. The internal handling for the manufacturer would
be simplified with only one type of package for the product. For an
external perspective of the manufacturer, the sales process could also be
simplified using unit B, since its sales representatives could focus on
selling one type of product concept rather than two, driving cost efficiency
and simplified communication.
