2.2. Silviculture of even-aged stands
2.2.1. Stand establishment
The forests growing in Finland are mainly even-aged,
resembling the natural forest structure. In the southern
part of the country the stands are normally regenerated
70–100 years. In Lapland the rotation length can be 160
years. About 50% of the stands will be regenerated
annually by planting, 20% are sown manually or using a
sowing machine and about 30% will be regenerated
naturally using seed trees (Finnish Statistical Yearbook of
Forestry, 2001).
