Network Rail analysis indicates that electric trains are cheaper than diesel
for all cost categories on a per vehicle mile basis: 33.3% for maintenance
costs, 44.7% for fuel cost and 13.3% for track wear and tear. The lease cost
per vehicle is also cheaper by 27.3%. Additional benefits accrue from
increased reliability. Carbon emissions per vehicle mile are estimated to be
20.7% lower and will clearly fall further as the energy sector decarbonises.
