While theory regarding self-as-subject suggests transferability
of losses (depletion of self-regulatory resources in one domain
can negatively affect other domains), an interesting question for
future research is whether the transferability of gains in self-asobject
conceptualizations (reaffirmation in one domain can positively
affect other domains) may also be possible. More specifically,
can strategies for developing regulatory capability in one domain
also increase regulatory capability in other domains? Perhaps they
could. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a technique that seems
to rely on self-as-subject dynamics, emphasizing how people can
change their own counterproductive thought patterns and behaviors
(CBT standing in notable contrast to other forms of therapy
that rely more heavily on self-as-object processes such as reflection
and self-appraisal). Perhaps this technique is one example of
how transferability of gains in self resources may occur in a selfas-
subject process, paralleling how reaffirmation offers transferable
gains in a self-as-object process.
