Immediately after delivery, a midwife who was not involved in the rest of the study visited each participant and randomised her to receive either home intervention or not (control group). The randomisation allocation schedule was generated by computer, and concealed in numbered sealed opaque envelopes. Arrangements were made for the first home visit if the girl was randomised to the intervention group, or a reminder given for the follow-up visit at 6 months to controls. Labour and delivery details were collated after discharge.
