Matrix Departmentalization
Matrix Departmentalization is a hybrid structure in which two or more forms of departmentalization are used together. The most common matrix combines the product and functional forms of departmentalization, but other forms may also be used. Exhibit 8.7 show the matrix structure used by PROCTER & GAMBLE, which has 138,000 employees working in 80 different countries. Across the top of Exhibit 8.7 , you can see that the company uses a product unit structure where it groups its billion-dollar brands into three global business units, each of which has two segments. The left side of the figure, however, shows that the company is also using a functional structure based on three functions: market development, global business service, and corporate functions.
The boxes in the figure represent the matrix structure, created by the combination of the product and functional structures.
