towards developing edible vaccines against animal
diseases except for foot and mouth disease and transmissible
gastroenteritis [8,9]. Development of vaccines
through transgenic plants depends on the candidate
gene and the target plant for which an efficient
transformation system and procedures for tissue culture
to regenerate the transgenic plants are available. Peanut
(Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the principal economic
oil seed legume and is largely cultivated in many tropical
and subtropical regions of the world. In addition, in
India, the plants after harvest are used as cattle feed.
Peanut, like other grain legumes, is recalcitrant to
transformation in spite of being a dicotyledonous
crop. However, genetic transformation of peanut has
been achieved using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation
[10/17] or by particle bombardment [18/20].
