Limitations and further work
This work has the usual limitations of a case study even
though it covers the whole of a devolved administration.
In identifying the consequences of loose coupling in asset
management systems, it has focussed on the position of
the NHS in Wales and its generalisability is limited especially
with the advent of devolution. However, even though
the separate nations within the UK are developing their
own unique approaches to delivering health care, the central
tenet of the NHS, to deliver health care free at the
point of use, remains. Further work examining loose coupling
in the organisational structures in the NHS in the
rest of the UK would add to the findings of this study
by providing a basis for comparison and the potential to
identify best practice. Repeating the investigation in the
NHS in Wales would provide a longitudinal dimension and
highlight the effectiveness of the reorganisation that has
recently taken place subsequent to this study being conducted
